L.A. Unified School District Serious About Getting the Lead Out
Monday, February 02, 2009
Every now and then kids need some friendly but firm verbal encouragement to accomplish a goal or complete an assigned task. If I had a nickel for every time I heard the phrase "get the lead out" from a frustrated parent or teacher, I’d have more metal than the local scrap yard.
Sometimes grown-ups need the same spoken motivator, particularly when it comes to the safety and welfare of our children. So when a local television station confronted the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District with the news lead samples taken from school drinking fountains exceeded the Environmental Protections Agency’s acceptable levels, it was time to "get the lead out", both literally and figuratively.
Within days, 80 school district employees took to the streets on a four-month test taking expedition, with the goal of retrieving water samples at the 34,000 faucets and drinking fountains in the eight hundred schools that comprise the L.A.U.S.D. KNBC’s Joel Grover reports on the school district’s plan to identify problem sources of drinking water and their progress towards solving them.
