Dealers Encouraged to be Proactive Regarding California Lead Law
Tuesday, February 03, 2009
Plumbing manufacturers' silence has started creating anxiety for some in the Kitchen/Bath distribution channel. Whether it's unfamiliarity with the new law, uncertainty regarding product availability, concern over potential shipping delays, uneasiness regarding enforcement, or general lack of communication (real or perceived), K/B dealers are being challenged to contact suppliers concerning their plan-of-action for the impending low lead statute AB 1953, which goes into effect in California (and Vermont, S152), less than one year from now.
On January 1, 2010 all fixtures that deliver consumable water are mandated to meet the state's requirement that lead levels cannot exceed 0.25%. A passive approach simply won't cut it argues the author, who contends the enormity of the legislation and the uncertainty surrounding its' implementation are a "red-tag" recipe for disaster for the unprepared and uninformed.
Since most projects are planned well in advance, some as much as a year prior, knowing with confidence a manufacturer's Lead Free product offering is critical to successful execution. Ultimately, the author places responsibility with the dealer to ensure compliant products make it to the job site, on time, on budget.
