Go Figure... NSF's 'Annex G' Provides Manufacturers with Lead Free Arithmetic
Wednesday, February 04, 2009
In a "calculated" strategy to provide a uniform methodology for product evaluation to the 2010 Lead Free laws coming out of California, Vermont and beyond, NSF International has incorporated Annex G to its' 2008 revision of NSF/ANSI Standard 61 – Drinking Water Systems Components.
Entitled, Weighted Average Lead Content Evaluation Procedure to a 0.25 Percent Lead Requirement (deep breath), Annex G provides plumbing manufacturers with a formula to determine if their products meet the average wetted surface requirements of the new laws.
By design, Annex G does not specifically identify California (or Vermont) by name. NSF is clearly trying to get ahead of the curve, counting on all states with new lower lead requirements, present or future, to recognize Annex G in their regulations.
A couple of other important notes to consider…Annex G does not contain a verification test protocol. That is still being worked out with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Also, Annex G does not consider acid washing or special coatings in weighted average calculations. The statute requires the evaluation be based on the percentage of lead content within each component.
