UL Prepares Validation Testing for Low Lead Laws
Thursday, March 19, 2009
Underwriters Laboratories has announced plans to establish new testing protocols for validation of low-lead compliance with California's AB 1953, due to go into affect January 1, 2010. The protocols are also designed for compliance with Vermont’s Senate Bill S.0152, which goes into affect on the same date.
UL's Jeff Smith anticipates their "lead content verification services" will be in place by the end this April. This will allow manufacturers to submit real products and demonstrate compliance to the new laws. If you recall from an earlier posting (see Go Figure…), NSF's Annex G, does not contain verification protocol, only "the math" for calculating the weighted average lead content.
As a refresher, California's (and Vermont’s) new laws will require all products that distribute water for human consumption shall contain no more than .25% lead, when calculated as the weighted average for those surfaces that come in contact with the water.
