Maryland Lead-Free Bill Withdrawn

Friday, April 17, 2009

Maryland may have been looking to go lead-free (see Is Maryland Looking Lead-Free?), but some now would call it more of a fleeting glance or a passing peek-a-boo. The law that was planned to take effect January 1, 2011 received an unfavorable report from the Economic Matters Committee less than two months after its’ first reading. Talk about a “blink of the eye”. An unfavorable report from the committee typically means the bill is dead for the legislative session.

Maryland House Bill #357, entitled “Business Occupations and Professions – Plumbers – Lead-Free Materials”, was designed to require materials used in the installation and repair of plumbing fittings intended to deliver water for human consumption be lead-free. It was very similar in its intent to California’s AB 1953, which dramatically reduces lead content in piping and fittings based on a weighted average calculation of wetted components.

Details of the report have not been disclosed but we’ll keep an eye out for more developments on this and other pertinent legislation that impacts the health and safety of our local communities. Stay tuned.
