Boilermakers Steamed Over Lead Notice Delay

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Purdue University students and faculty were not pleased to learn school officials took four weeks to alert the campus of high levels of lead found in the school's drinking water system. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) discovered the elevated lead levels in five buildings during routine testing this past September. School officials (and the state) waited to make a formal announcement because they saw no immediate danger to the general population. So much for adage it's better to be safe...so now they're sorry given the unfavorable press this has whipped up. To their credit, Purdue took corrective action within 24 hours of notification of the violation, flushing the system with a phosphate chemical to coat the pipes. More testing and retesting is underway.

Considering the football team is a collective 1 - 4 with recent losses to perennial football factories, Northwestern and Northern Illinois, Purdue is due to make a comeback this week against Minnesota, and the EPA. Some good news, national pundits have Purdue ranked as high as 5th in national pre-season polls.
