UL and WQA Provide More Options for Lead Free Certification
Monday, January 04, 2010
Looks like NSF is no longer the only game in town for product certification to California and Vermont's new low lead laws that go into effect January 1, 2010. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the Water Quality Association (WQA) have recently announced programs to provide manufacturers with two additional choices for certification testing and compliance. As we see it, that's a good thing for all involved.
If you're a manufacturer of products that dispense water for drinking or cooking, more vendor opportunities means more competition for testing dollars. More options translates to more competitive testing costs. If your a consumer or plumbing professional, additional testing services should equate to a greater availability of certified products, and bring them faster to the market as well. Spreading the workload across three suppliers versus one should significantly improve turn-a-round and shorten time in queue.
UL's General Manager of its Global Water Business stated, "UL is giving manufacturers their first option of demonstrating compliance with the new low lead laws using a means other than Annex G [NSF]". UL added it will continue to provide certification to Annex G in addition to it's new service offering. The WQA's process will feature XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) scanning on materials that contain lead in their formulation.
