Elevated Lead Levels Found in NJ

Monday, January 18, 2010

Don't tell Tony Soprano but elevated levels of lead were identified in local drinking water by the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) as recently as September and October of last year. Affected communities include Paterson, Passaic, Prospect Park and Clifton. For all you trivia buffs out there, Clifton provided location shots (no pun intended) for the infamous mob drama series.

PVWC's Executive Director attributes the elevated readings to older infrastructure including lead pipes and antiquated residential plumbing. In response to the findings, the commission sent out an APB to local residents advising them of a list of actions being taken to make the problem go away. In addition the commission has stepped up monitoring activities, replaced lead service pipes, hired an outside consultant and asked residents to flush their lines prior to consumption. Bada Bing.
