IBM Reboots: Retest for Lead at Research Park Underway

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Water faucets and fountains in four buildings at IBM's Hudson Valley Research Park in East Fishkill, NY were found to have elevated levels of lead, according to the Dutchess County Water and Wastewater (DCWWA) authority which conducted the tests. IBM, along with the Dutchess County Health Department, has begun retesting and conducting further investigation.

While the DCWWA Executive Director claims the elevated levels are not severe, there's no denying they exist. Interim steps have been taken to minimize the risks associated with the elevated levels. Employees are being asked to drink water from water coolers, not faucets and IBM has asked cafeteria services vendor flush water from faucets on a daily basis before use.

The likely cause; the facility's plumbing hardware. Since the water line running to the water authority to the park is only three years old , lead pipes in and throughout the facility are suspected.
