EPA Targets 4 New Chemicals...59,910 to Go

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

A New York Times article published last December found that 20% of U.S. water treatment centers were in violation of the Safe Water Drinking Act. It gets better (actually worse), less than 6% were held accountable by the Environmental Protection Agency over concerns some municipalities would pass along the cost of fines to the taxpayer. Could these findings have prompted the EPA to release a new "Drinking Water Strategy", taking aim at four known carcinogens, and tighten-up existing regulations already in place?

Tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, acrylamide and epiichlorohydrin, by-products of industrial and water treatment processes, all made the EPA hit list. If those four words don't prompt someone to stop what they're doing and run out and buy some type of water filter, nothing will. Regardless of what lead (pun not intended) to this point, were thankful the EPA is focusing their attention on these compounds and are tightening-up the ship at the same time. Closer to home, the EPA will also re-evaluate standards for fourteen other contaminants including arsenic, lead and copper.

The EPA currently regulates 90 contaminants but estimates more than 60,000 exist in the U.S.
