Maryland Back on Lead Free Fast Track
Friday, May 07, 2010
The state of Maryland, which withdrew House Bill #357 in March 2009 due to an unfavorable report by the Economic Matters Committee, is now speeding ahead with a new bill, HB 372, that would significantly reduce the amount of lead allowed in plumbing fittings that provide water for human consumption through drinking or cooking. The new bill mirrors laws currently enforced in California and Vermont, which require less than 0.25% lead, calculated as a weighted average for fitting surfaces that come in contact with water. The bill, which is scheduled to take affect on January 2012, has considerable momentum, recently passing the House by a vote of 139-0, and the Senate 47-0. The bill currently is awaiting presentation to the Governor. Stay tuned for more updates.
