Lead Free Movement Going National?
Thursday, May 20, 2010
"It's time we protect the rest of the country." Bold words from Rep. Anna G. Eshoo, a democrat from the state of California, and member of the House subcommittee that just passed legislation to mandate the lead content of potable plumbing products to no more than 0.25%. The 0.25% represents a weighted average of surfaces that come in contact with water which is intended for drinking and cooking purposes.
Eshoo wrote the legislation and based it on California's lead free law, which went into effect on January 1 of this year. The legislation is expected to move to the Energy and Commerce Committee for further review. According to the article, tainted water is estimated to account for 20% of human lead exposure. Economists estimate lead exposure costs more than $43 billion annually in health-related and lost time at work costs. Significant amounts of ingested lead may lead to brain damage and long term developmental issues in children. Stay tuned.
